Landon Curt Noll - LavaRnd co-inventor
Landon Curt Noll has been using Unix since 1974.
He has been communicating over the ARPAnet / Internet for
nearly that long.
Among his several areas of specialization are security risk evaluation,
Unix system and infrastructure hardening, Linux firewalls, security
incident response, and cryptographic security. Landon's underlying
philosophy of security is that it is an enabler.
Landon is a consultant for
SystemExperts.
Prior to joining SystemExperts, Landon was the Principle Architect
for Certive.
Prior to that he spent five years with SGI in a variety of roles working
consultatively with both SGI customers and SGI engineering teams.
His SGI security responsibilities encompassed cryptography, PKI, Linux
development, and networking.
Landon Curt Noll is the 'N' in the widely used
FNV
hash.
He is also the founder and judge of the
International Obfuscated C
Code Contest.
He was an active member of working group that developed the initial
drafts of the IEEE POSIX P1003.1 and P1003.2 standards.
He serves as a
Cooperative Computing Award
adviser to the
Electronic Frontier Foundation.
He was the co-author of the SMail mail transport system
and has been a key contributor to Usenet.
Landon has significant experience in Number Theory, Cryptography, and
Cryptology including PKI design, secure protocol development, and
key management.
He is a co-inventor of the
SGI classic lavarandtm:
a method of seeding
Pseudo-Random Number Generator
using a
chaotic source.
Landon has developed or co-developed several high speed computational methods.
In addition to his publications, Landon has held or co-held
8
world records related to the discovery of large prime numbers.
Landon is an active citizen in his
Sunnyvale California
community.
He has served on a number of boards and commissions, City Council member,
and Vice Mayor.
While he recently he took a leave of absence from elected office Landon
is actively involved in influencing local, state and national policy on
matters relating to the Internet.
Landon maintains an active interest in Astronomy.
In his spare time he models the orbits of
Near-Earth Asteroids.
He is also a dedicated
total
solar eclipse observer.
Landon has conducted a number of research projects at the
Fremont Peak
Observatory.
He has served volunteer giving a hosting a number of observing
programs for both park visitors and private groups.
Landon graduated from
Linfield College
with a BA in Math/Physics.
Simon Cooper - LavaRnd co-inventor
Simon Cooper is a computer professional currently working in the
San Francisco bay area for
Apple Computer, Inc.
He has worked in different computer related fields ranging from hardware
through operating systems and device drivers to application software
and systems support in both commercial and educational environments.

Simon is a judge of the
International Obfuscated C
Code Contest.
He is in charge of producing the
17th International Obfuscated C Code Contest.
Simon has released a small number of his own open source programs and has
contributed time and code to the
XFree86 project.
Simon was a contributor to the
SGI classic lavarandtm
project.
Together with Landon, Simon co-invented LavaRnd.
